What You Visit

Nikko Toshogu Shrine

Mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Edo shogunate. Built 1617, expanded 1636. 40 buildings with extraordinary gold-leaf, lacquerwork, and 5,000 carved decorative elements. UNESCO-inscribed 1999. The Yomeimon Gate took 15 years to build and features 508 carved figures. The famous ‘See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil’ monkeys are carved above the horse stable.

Shinkyo Bridge

One of Japan’s most recognized bridges. Red lacquer arc over the Daiya River at the entrance to Nikko’s sacred area. First built in 1636. The bridge and surrounding cedar forest create one of Japan’s most photographed compositions.

Lake Chuzenji

A volcanic crater lake at 1,269 meters altitude, formed 20,000 years ago by Mt. Nantai lava flow. The Irohazaka road climbs 28 hairpin turns through forest to reach it. Seasonal color changes make this one of Japan’s most scenic mountain lakes.

Kegon Falls

97 meters of water dropping straight into a rocky gorge below Lake Chuzenji. One of Japan’s three most celebrated waterfalls. A cliff elevator cuts to an observation platform at the base — spray creates constant rainbows in warm months.

Akechidaira Ropeway

A short ropeway to an observation platform at 1,373 meters. The view covers Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, Mt. Nantai, and the entire Nikko valley. This is the perspective that makes sense of the whole landscape.

Nikko National Park

A protected area covering 1,149 km². Your guide selects the best seasonal walking areas. Autumn (mid-October to mid-November) is peak for forest color in the Nikko region.
