Hakone Ropeway
4km aerial gondola over the Owakudani active volcanic zone. On clear days, Mt. Fuji rises directly ahead. The ride passes over live sulfur vents and boiling terrain below.
Owakudani — Great Boiling Valley
An active volcanic zone with hydrogen sulfide vents, boiling mud pools, and year-round steam. The kuro tamago (black eggs) are hard-boiled in the volcanic springs. Local legend: eating one adds 7 years to your life.
Lake Ashi
A volcanic caldera lake. On clear days: Mt. Fuji reflected in the water with a red torii gate in the foreground — one of Japan’s most iconic scenes. Sightseeing boats cross the lake. The Moto-Hakone cedar avenue runs along the southern shoreline.
Hakone Open Air Museum
Japan’s first and most-visited open-air sculpture museum. 120+ works across 7 hectares. The Picasso Pavilion holds 300 original works. Entry fee applies.
Hakone Checkpoint
Reconstruction of the original Edo-period checkpoint on the Tokaido road. The museum explains how the Tokugawa shogunate controlled all movement between Edo and Kyoto for 260 years.
